I'm going to show you how we increased our client's organic search traffic by 1367% thanks to SEO.

In real terms, this means that we have grown from 920 to 13 503 visitors per website per month.

This year there has been stable growth across the board.

I'm going to tell you about everything we did. First, let's take a closer look at the case study site.

The site is in a very competitive affiliate category for high commercial intent targeting terms.

They publish mixed content including product reviews and product comparisons. This is truly a completely hardcore affiliate site.

Our main goal was to increase organic search traffic by: 

  • strengthening the most important customer pages;
  • building a healthy backlink profile;
  • elimination of problems with content;
  • building the trust and authority of Google in the client's web pages.

All of this was easier said than done due to the many challenges we faced.

The biggest difficulties that we had to overcome.

Every SEO strategy we develop must overcome a different set of core challenges.

When we quadrupled search traffic in the health niche, we had to beat big brands with big budgets. When we tripled our e-commerce revenue, we had to solve a number of technical issues.

Our case study site was relatively young. This time, we had to overcome both technical challenges and compete with big brands with big budgets.

After analyzing the site, we realized that:

  • There were a lot of outdated tests and images, even though the site was only a couple of years old. We all know how much Google loves fresh content.
  • We also found that the customer created a profile with unnatural links. They contained super spam, anchors with a lot of keywords for affiliate pages.
  • The site also lacked key trust signals. It looked like an anonymous spam affiliate site because it was.

Therefore, we developed a customized strategy to build a foundation that both Google and people love.

Create a plan of attack.

In all fairness, it should be said that there was a real battle ahead of us. So, we have broken down our attack plan from 6 key parts that allowed us to win the war. If you apply them, then you are guaranteed to add traffic to the site!

Step # 1 - Increase the number of key pages.

To help support the key pages of our affiliates, we have created a new website. It is dedicated to a personalized look at all of the products listed on the key review pages.

The goal is to create a series of complementary articles with product reviews for internal linking with an exact match to the anchor text.

I assure you that internal linking is the most powerful tactic that you don't take full advantage of. If you get that one thing out of this case study, you’ll already improve your SEO.

Step # 2 - Update old content.

Although the site was relatively young, it contained a lot of outdated content. Fixing this can often be an expensive and time-consuming process, but in this case we used a quick fix.

All we did was use the command "Site:" on Google and listed 2018 and 2019.

Then we just went through each search result and made a few short updates. For example, updating dates, fixing broken images, links, or product recommendations.

Step # 3 - Analyze Backlinks.

In our initial assessment of the site, we knew that the existing backlink profile was a problem because:

  • the pages linking to our client were out of date;
  • the quality of the linked sites was low;
  • precise anchors were overused.

These are all exactly the problems that you do not want to face!

So, first we rejected all links that were outgoing:

  • from irrelevant content;
  • from sites that we have identified as spamming;
  • from sites de-indexed by Google.

It also helped us regain partial control over the breakdown of the anchor text. Most of these sites used exact match bindings.

We then rolled out a specific strategy for generating new links, which I'll share with you in a moment.

Step # 4 - Build credibility and credibility.

The first thing we do with customer sites is to check if they have gained credibility and trust from Google.

Quite often, we find affiliate sites that struggle to get ranked but also fail to publish:

  • information about the company;
  • the address;
  • phone number.

There is also no information about who is actually behind the site. An affiliate site is a real business, just like an e-commerce site. It is important for clients to know who they are dealing with.

So, for this site, we took care of all this:

  • created pages about the company;
  • issued 2 current profiles of the authors;
  • added structured data about articles and organizations using Rankmath.

We also noted that the site lacked any kind of social presence. In the long run, this is a problem as Google seeks to rank more “brands” and fewer affiliate sites in search results. Therefore, we created quality social media profiles, which we then incorporated them into the structured data of the site.

Step # 5 - Shift Focus.

The first few months of the campaign focused solely on "improving Google compatibility" through site structure, technical SEO, content, and backlinks. Now that the site had a solid foundation, we decided to shift the focus.

So, in the fifth month, we focused all our resources on building as many high-quality links as possible. This is to ensure you get the best ROI in the future.

We spent almost no time worrying about internal SEO or content. We've now invested 100% budget in creating high quality links every month.

Step # 6 - Building Links.

Earlier in the campaign, we took care of bad links by disavowing.

We have now started to create high quality branded home page links.

We did this until there was a 50/50 parity between the number of links to the home page and links to the rest of the site.

From that point on, we started building links to the main affiliate pages, but with a careful selection of branded anchors and mixed targeting anchors.

We made sure to create links only from:

  • relevant sites;
  • current search traffic;
  • quality content.

This was done manually to secure the placement of guest posts, where we could control the content and anchor text.

The anchor text strategy leaned towards branded links with multiple mixed anchors and multiple keyword anchors. 

We also took care of creating links to each of the sub "overview" pages along with the key pages themselves.

We have maintained this balance throughout the campaign and continue to strengthen ties in line with the strategy outlined above.

Results.

Our client's organic search traffic grew by 1367%!

This means that we have increased them from 920 visitors per month to 13,503.

It is impossible to ignore the fact that search traffic continues to grow:

the number of visitors to the site has grown
organic traffic has grown

Not bad for a young affiliate site in a highly competitive niche.

Findings.

So this is it! The problems we faced, the strategy developed and the results achieved.

It was not easy given the young site and strong competition. This is not the first time we have encountered this problem, and it will not be the last.

  • giving Google what it wants;
  • building a solid foundation for SEO;
  • building trust and credibility;
  • building high-quality relevant links.
